Has there ever been anything original? I mean, truly original- that is, not derivative. Or, is all that we are capable is derivation? Or, more accurately, adding bits of originality to a derivation?
This thought arose, upon discussion of twenty-something fashion in the Mission- where you can still witness kids dressed grungey or ‘indie’, or hip and 80s - or, at least, those tinges remain. When I was in my 20s, was I simply echoing, a sensibility from long ago? (e.g. the 70s?). Do we simply do a dance whereby we reference things from 20 years ago? Dare not echo things from the previous decade, because that would not be ‘cool’; that is, it would be too recent a reference to be ‘cool.’
Ergo, in the 2000s, the 80s is cooler than the 70s. In the 90’s, the 70’s was cooler than the 80s. Etc. It’s oddly disturbing when fashion is reduced to an dependable equation.
Zen Koen: at what point will VH1 start pining for now?
simply put: one more, one more, one more. . .ad infinitum
oh yes:
buddhism wants us to escapes this.
the world of advertising? encourages this.
yesterday, I watched “10 Questions for the Dalai Lama”. The dalai lama was asked what he wanted to do in his final days. He replied, “I would like to go off some place far, in the wilderness, some isolated place. Like a wounded animal”. . .[and focus on my practice.] Aye aye Dalai Lama!!! Full steam ahead! I’m glad to hear that retiring is not considered a bad thing.
The other tidbit he said that I found amusing is that he’d like to spend his last days reaching for small goals, nothing big. Why? Because if the goals are too big, he said, that might result in a regretful end to his life, one where he is left wishing he had achieved a certain goal.
“it is no bad thing to celebrate a simple life.”
Another notable:
A monk had been heard saying he’d rather teach the wealthy than the poor about suffering - because the wealthy, he said, already understand that money and wealth do not solve one’s problems, or assure one’s happiness. This is one area about which the wealthy are (or should be) wise.
let’s just get this over with. generally, i hate blogs. why, pray tell? pretention. . .and messes. I am not a fan of either. . .and that’s what blogs seem to be made of, and what they generate.
then why join the club? well, i like the dynamism and agility they promote. that simple.
i’m nixing my old website. . .because it sat around like old bread. 3 year old bread - and what’s the point of that? too old for croutons.
